Privacy Notice

Purrgress is run by Eric Tannehill, an individual developer, not a company. Questions, requests, or complaints: privacy@purrgressapp.com.
This notice says what the app collects, why, who can see it, and how to get rid of it. It is written to be read, not to be impressive.
The short version
Purrgress stores the care records you type in, and the name and email on the Google account you sign in with. It shows those records to the other people on your rescue team, according to the role they have been given. It does not contain advertising, analytics, or tracking of any kind. Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared with anyone outside your team except Google, which stores the data on our behalf.
The person who runs Purrgress can technically see what is stored, in the same way the administrator of any app's database can. See "Who can see your records" below for what that means in practice.
What we collect
From your Google account, when you sign in
- Your name, email address, and profile photo
- A Google account identifier, used to recognise you on your next sign-in
We ask Google only for your email address at sign-in. We do not receive your password, your contacts, your calendar, or anything else in your Google account.
What you type into the app
- Animal records: name, sex, colour and markings, collar colour, photos, estimated date of birth, and whether that date is an estimate
- Feeding logs: amount, time, method, latch quality, whether the kitten urinated or passed stool, formula used, and any notes
- Weights, and the date and time of each weigh-in
- Medical records: vaccinations and their lot numbers, dewormer and other medications, spay/neuter date and the practice or vet named, microchip number, brand, and implant date
- Outcomes: adopted, transferred, returned to field, or deceased, and the date
- Team information: the rescue teams you belong to, your role in each, and the display name you choose
- Invitations: when you invite someone, the email address you type is stored so their invitation can be matched when they first sign in
On your device only
Your reminder settings, which litters you have muted, and whether you prefer grams or pounds and ounces are stored on that device and are not sent to us.
Collected automatically
Google Firebase, which provides our sign-in and database, records sign-in events, approximate times, and IP addresses as part of operating and securing the service. We use Google Play Integrity to check that requests come from a genuine installation of the app rather than an automated tool.
What we do not collect
No advertising. No analytics or usage tracking. No crash reporting. No location. No contacts. No microphone or camera access beyond the photo you deliberately attach to an animal. Nothing is sold, rented, or shared for anyone's marketing, and nothing about you is tracked across other apps or websites.
Google Drive backups
Backups are optional and are stored in your own Google Drive, not ours.
The first time you run a backup, Google asks separately for permission. We
request one narrow permission, drive.file, which grants access only to files
the app itself creates. We cannot see, open, or list anything else in your
Drive. Not your documents, not your photos, nothing that was there before.
You can withdraw that permission at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions. Backup files already in your Drive stay there, under your control, and are yours to keep or delete.
Who can see your records
Your rescue team, according to role. A foster sees only the litters assigned to them. Coordinators, co-owners, and the owner see all of the team's animals. Alerts about someone else's litter reach you only if both of you agreed to share them.
Google, as our service provider. Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore, and Cloud Storage hold the data on our behalf, under Google's terms, in data centres in the United States.
Me, as the person who runs the service. This is worth being direct about. Purrgress is built on Google Firebase, and the administrator of a Firebase project can technically read and change everything stored in it. The access rules that stop one team seeing another team's animals apply to the app on your phone; they do not apply to the administration console. There is no setting that changes this. It is how the platform works, and it is true of every app built this way.
In practice I look at stored records only when I have to: to fix a bug someone has reported, or if the law requires it. I do not read teams' records out of curiosity, and I do not use anything in them for any purpose other than running the app. Backups in your own Google Drive are outside this entirely, because the permission to write them exists only on your device and I have no way to reach them.
Nobody else. We do not share your information with other organisations, and we do not sell it. We would disclose it if the law actually required it, on a court order or similar, and not otherwise.
How long it is kept
Records stay until someone deletes them. There are two different kinds of information here, and they are treated differently.
Your personal information
Your name, email address, profile photo, the display name you chose, and your membership in every team are deleted on request. Email privacy@purrgressapp.com from the address on your account and it is done within 30 days, with a confirmation when it is.
If you are the owner of a team that has other members, transfer ownership to someone else first, or tell us what should happen to the team, so you are not deleting other people's access along with your own.
The animals' care records
Feeding logs, weights, and medical history stay with the rescue team. They are records about an animal, not about you: a vet treating that cat in three years, or an adopter asking what vaccinations it had, may need them. They are the rescue's records in the same way a paper binder is, and they do not leave when a foster does. The same applies if you leave a team or are removed from one. You lose access immediately, and the records remain.
Where the two meet: your name on the records you entered
Every feeding, weigh-in, and medical entry records who logged it, and that name stays on the record. It is shown to the people on that rescue team, the same people who could already see it while you were fostering, and to nobody else.
We keep it deliberately. A care record that does not say who gave a medication is a worse record. If a vet asks who administered a dose, or an adopter asks who raised the litter, the answer should be in the file. It is the same reason a paper binder is initialled.
If you would rather your name came off, ask and we will take it off. Email privacy@purrgressapp.com, and the entries become "logged by a former member" with their times, amounts, and notes intact. You do not have to give a reason.
The line, drawn plainly
Deleted when you ask us to delete your account:
- your sign-in account, and the identifier that links it to Google
- your name, email address, and profile photo
- the display name you set in each team
- your membership and role in every team
- invitations you sent or received that are still pending
- any alert-sharing arrangements you are part of
Kept, because it belongs to the rescue:
- feedings, weights, and medical records for the animals, including your name as the person who recorded each one, unless you ask us to remove it
- medication doses, including who gave them
- photographs of the animals that you uploaded
- notes you typed onto an animal's record
Always removed on request, whether or not you delete your account:
- your name on the entries above
- anything personal you typed into a free-text note, such as your phone number, an adopter's address, or details about another person. Tell us where it is and we will take it out.
If you think a team is holding information about you that it should not, write to us and we will look at it.
Your choices
- Change your display name in the app, under People and roles. Useful if your Google account shows a handle rather than your name
- Leave a team at any time from the same screen
- Turn off reminders per device in Settings
- Withdraw Drive access at myaccount.google.com/permissions
- Ask for a copy of your data, or ask us to correct or delete it, at privacy@purrgressapp.com. See "How long it is kept" for what deletion covers
If you are in the UK, the EU, California, or anywhere else with privacy laws that give you rights over your data, use the same address. We will honour those requests regardless of where you live, because keeping two standards would be more work than doing it properly once.
Children
Purrgress is for people aged 13 and over. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, email us and we will remove it.
If you are between 13 and 18, you should have a parent or guardian's permission before signing up, and you are almost certainly fostering under a rescue that has its own rules about that.
Security
Data travels over encrypted connections and is stored by Google Firebase. Access is enforced by server-side security rules, so what you can see is decided on the server and not by the app on your phone, so a modified app cannot read another team's animals.
No service is perfectly secure, and we are not going to claim otherwise. If you find a security problem, please email privacy@purrgressapp.com rather than posting it publicly, and we will fix it.
Changes to this notice
If this notice changes in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and tell you in the app before the change takes effect. Minor wording fixes will just appear here.
